Sounds of the rural image: a journey through the sound representations of the countryside in the spanish cinema
This episode is presented as an open investigation and an invitation to collective reflection. Through the history of music in film, we will explore the types of music used to present and give meaning to rural life in Spanish audiovisual media. Music and sound, combined with image, are not neutral. Rhythm, the textures of instruments, and their different types are tools that can be used to allude to symbolic imagery, to signify, and to represent. We will listen to the soundtracks of films and documentaries that address the problems that the countryside has suffered throughout the 20th century in our country, some of them produced by the Franco dictatorship, in which music plays an important role, supporting imaginaries, fantasies and political uses of the countryside.
