On the 22nd and the 27th of February, we hosted two sessions of the film and documentary cycle "Sound of the Rural Image", directed by Clara de Pedro. Through these, we explored the representation of rural areas through the sound analysis of cinema in Spain from the 1930s to the present day.

In the first session on February 22, we explored how sound has contributed to building different narratives about rural areas in Spanish cinema since the 1930s. Starting from Florián Rey's La Aldea Maldita (in its versions of 1930 and 1942), where silence and music emphasize the drama of emigration and the harshness of life in the countryside. We continued with "Las Hurdes, land without bread" (1933) by Luis Buñuel, a documentary that reinforces an image of the countryside linked to misery and abandonment through its off-road narration and the use of extradiegetic sound. We also viewed "Dejos de los árboles" (1972) by Jacinto Esteva, a work that, from the montage and sound experimentation, invites us to a critical reflection on the traditions and rituals popular in Francoist Spain.
